SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol employed to connect to a web server and perform various tasks using a command line. The protocol is preferred by many skilled users, since the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it can't be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access could be used for a lot of things with regards to the type of hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for example, SSH is one of several ways to import/export a database or to upload a file when the website hosting server permits it. When you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH could be used for virtually everything - you could install software or restart specific services including the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is used primarily with UNIX-like Platforms, but there are clients which permit you to use the protocol if your PC is running a different OS as well. The connection is created on TCP port 22 by default and the remote server always listens for incoming connections on that port even though a number of providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Web Hosting

In case you have a web hosting account with us and you'd like to deal with your content remotely using SSH, you may receive SSH access to the account using your Hepsia Control Panel. If your package does not come with this feature by default, you can easily add it with several mouse clicks from the Upgrades menu. Within the SSH section of the Control Panel, you will see the host, the port number and the username you should use when you connect to the account. You can even select what password you would want to use, given that it doesn't need to be the same as the one for the account. We have prepared a number of Help articles in which you can find all the commands that you will be able to use with a shared hosting plan, as well as examples of how they're used. Furthermore, if SSH access is enabled for your account, you will be able to establish a Secure FTP (SFTP) connection through a standard client like FileZilla, for instance.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is available as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server packages, while with others you are able to include it from the hosting Control Panel if needed - even just for the current month. In either case, you can activate and de-activate the feature with a single click from the SSH section of the CP. In the same location, you will find the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box where you may type in the password which you want to use, because it doesn't need to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you may also change it as much as you require. A complete list of the commands that can be executed in a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and a few examples. An extra feature after SSH access is allowed will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports such connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Servers

When you purchase a new VPS server from us, it'll provide full root access and you will be able to connect to the server and to handle everything through an SSH console. The function comes by default with all package deals, so you won't have to enable or upgrade anything. Your hosting server will be set up shortly after you buy it and the instant you get the Welcome email with the login details, you could connect using the server’s main IP address and start working. As the VPS is a software emulation of a dedicated server and is isolated from the other accounts within the physical machine, there will be no restrictions regarding the commands which you can use. You'll have full root access, so that you can set up and run any application which can work on a Linux machine, manage files, folders and databases or start/stop/reboot the whole machine or any software running on it.
